Pumpkins!

It has been a while since I lasted posted on here!
I am quite pleased with our first year of growing our own veg.
Nearly everything I planted produced a good amount of veg, the only thing was
the peas that did not amount to much.
The courgette's took over one bed and we were sick of eating them. I did not realise
how they would spread and how much they would produce. But we live and learn.
So I won't plant as many next year.

I thought I would share with you our two pumpkins from our garden, I
am quite proud of them!
We picked them yesterday so they are now sat in the conservatory waiting for Adele & Jake

to carve them out, then I can make pumpkin pie & soup, hmmmm can't wait.

My First Radish!!

Well here he is my first radish and we called him Rodney Radish!
We are not mad, just a little family fun!
We picked a few yesterday and they were delicious, much better than shop bought ones.

Our Cat's & The Birds!

Life with two cats is never dull!
Kitty & Tabby are both strays and we have had them both for just over a year.
Kitty is 13years & Tabby 15 months old.
Last week Kitty brought me a present, baby starling number 1.
We are not used to cats and I was horrified to say the least.
Kevin made her drop it and the bird was still alive as you can see from the photo.
We then put the baby down the bottom of the garden where it was safe and the parents could see to it and the did.
But Kitty was determined to stalk it but she could not get to it I am happy to say.

The next day baby starling 2 fell from it's nest and ended up in a hole.
The parents were frantic and could not get to it.
I would normally not intervene but Tabby was on the prowl and he new where it was.
I got the baby bird in a plant pot and put it down the bottom of the garden where it as safe.
Then the parents took over.
I spent all day keeping a close eye on the cats with my water spray at the ready.

I just hope that the 2 babys have survived.

Next Stage In The Garden

As we have an odd shape garden it was a difficult decision to know what to do with it.
Kitty just had to be in the photo!

Kevin spent all day Sunday in the garden in the heat making another bed
& clearing the bottom part of the garden and leveling it out.

At the end of a hard day & boy was he pooped!

19th May 2009

Here is my potato barrel!
This is the first time I have tried to grow them.
But with all the rain we have had I have to cover the barrel
so they don't get water logged. I just hope I am doing the right thing.

This is another bed in which I have lettuce & spinach.

I have put some broken egg shell at each end of the cloche to keep the slugs away
and to keep the cats off.

More on the cats tomorrow!

My Garden

I thought I would start off my new blog by showing you my garden in progress.
Our back garden has never been much of a garden with vegetables and flowers.
Having four children who liked to play football, you can just imagine what it did to
the garden. Our garden is only small.
It was just impossible to have any flowers
But I will say that the rhubarb has survived everything.
Now our eldest three children who are adults and Jake who is twelve no longer play football
in the garden.
So we decided to try our hand at growing some vegetables but first we needed to make
a few raised beds.

First bed finished around the rhubarb 11th May 2009.

11th May 2009 good job I had bought this cloche from Poundland with all the rain.
along with the rhubarb I have radish & butternut squash in this bed.

I will show the next stage tomorrow!
